Two young Mormons and a trusty horse are set to arrive in Minneapolis. No, it isn’t the beginning of a joke; it’s Minneapolis’ 2012-2013 Broadway season! The 2011 Tony winners for Best Musical and Play, The Book of Mormon and War Horse, will be part of the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s next season. The lineup, which was announced on January 26, will also include the musicals Catch Me If You Can, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Flashdance, Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins.
The Book of Mormon, winner of nine Tony Awards, will open at the Orpheum Theatre on February 5, 2013 and close on February 17, 2013. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon follows two young Mormon missionaries sent to Uganada, who soon discover their training did not quite prepare them for the world outside of Salt Lake City.
War Horse, winner of five Tony Awards, will run from June 12, 2013 through June 23. Using extraordinary puppets, War Horse tells the story of young Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France at the outbreak of World War I. Albert, unable to forget Joey and still not old enough to enlist, embarks on a mission to find him and bring him home.
Catch Me If You Can, based on the 2002 film by Stephen Spielberg, will open at the Orpheum Theatre on December 11, 2012 and close on December 16. Inspired by the real-life story of Frank Abagnale, Jr., this high-flying production tells how a teenager who ran away from home successfully posed as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer with nothing but his boyish charm, a big imagination–and millions of dollars in forged checks.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert will run from May 8, 2013 through May 12. This Broadway hit features a bevy of disco favorites, including “It’s Raining Men,” “Finally” and “I Will Survive.” Priscilla tells the story of a trio of friends on a road trip who hop aboard a battered bus in search of love and friendship in the middle of the Australian outback.
Flashdance will shimmy onto the Minneapolis stage from April 2, 2013 through April 7. Based on the hit 1983 movie, Flashdance tells the story of Alex, a working-class girl from Pittsburgh striving to make her dreams of becoming a professional dancer a reality. The show features the hit songs from the movie, “Flashdance—What a Feeling,” “Maniac,” “I Love Rock & Roll” and 10 original songs.
Beauty and the Beast will return to the Orpheum Theatre from October 16, 2012 to October 21, after originating its first national tour there in 1995. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature film, this musical love story features the songs “Be Our Guest” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
The Disney classic Mary Poppins will open on April 23 and close on April 28. It features songs from the hit film, including “A Spoonful of Sugar,” "Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Step In Time,” as well as new numbers written specifically for the stage musical.
