'Les Miserables' & 'Sister Act'
A soulful Irishman and a bunch of Lost Boys from Neverland are headed to Minneapolis. The Hennepin Theatre Trust 2013-2014 Broadway season will include the Tony-winning musical Once and the hit play Peter and the Starcatcher. The season lineup also includes Les Miserables, Wicked, We Will Rock You, The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Mamma Mia!, Sister Act and Ghost. All shows will play the Orpheum Theatre.
Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Once brings the touching tale of two Dublin musicians to life on stage. Based on the Oscar-winning 2006 film, Once features an ensemble of actors who play their own instruments on stage. The musical focuses on a street musician who is about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. Featuring the award-winning song “Falling Slowly,” Once will open on April 1, 2014 and run through April 6.
Audiences will know the story of how Peter Pan came to be when Peter and the Starcatcher lands from March 11, 2014 through March 16. A prequel to Peter Pan, this inventive play features a company of 12 actors portraying some 50 characters, all on a journey to answer the question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Refused To Grow Up?
The 25th anniversary production of Les Miserables, based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, will run from July 30, 2013 through August 4. The story follows ex-convict Jean Valjean as he travels down a road of redemption, faith and love against the backdrop of an uprising in France. The beloved musical includes the classic songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own” and “One Day More.”
The Broadway mega hit Wicked flies into Minneapolis from September 18, 2013 through October 27. A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, the musical spotlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous characters: the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good. The Grammy-winning score by Stephen Schwartz features the songs “The Wizard and I,” “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.”
The bombastic anthems of Queen will shake Minneapolis when We Will Rock You sets up shop from November 19, 2013 through November 24. Featuring 24 hits of the legendary band, We Will Rock You is a guitar-thrashing musical that has delighted over 15 million theatergoers since it debuted in London’s West End in 2002 and has since been seen in 17 countries.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic will swoop onto the Minneapolis stage when an all-new production of The Phantom of the Opera opens on December 13, 2013 and runs through January 5, 2014. Following an acclaimed sell-out tour of the United Kingdom, Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of the hit musical will embark on a new US tour. Featuring a brilliant new production and costume design and new staging, the thrilling love triangle between the mysterious Phantom, Christine and Raoul will come alive all over again.
Another Lloyd Webber hit, Evita, will tango into Minneapolis from January 28, 2014 through February 2. Based on Argentina’s historic icon Eva Peron, the musical tells the story of the young woman who used her beauty and charisma to rise meteorically from the country’s slums to the presidential mansion as First Lady. Evita tells Peron’s unforgettable true story, while featuring some of musical theater’s most famous songs, including "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying, Adored."
Mamma Mia! tells the story of a bride-to-be who never met her father. After snooping in her mother's diary, the daughter invites three likely paternal candidates to her wedding, hoping to identify her dad by the time she walks down the aisle. The show includes 22 ABBA hits, including "Dancing Queen," "Super Trouper," "Take a Chance on Me" and "The Winner Takes It All." The dance party will begin on February 18 and run through February 23.
The funky nuns of Sister Act will make their Minneapolis debut from May 6, 2014 through May 11. The musical comedy (based on the hit film) focuses on disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a crime and goes into hiding in a convent. Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her new “sisters” find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.
The romance of Ghost will touch a whole new generation as the story of the 1990 movie comes to the stage in a brand new musical. The story follows Sam and Molly, a young couple whose connection takes a shocking turn after Sam’s untimely death. Trapped between two worlds, Sam turns to a storefront psychic who helps him protect Molly and avenge his death. The musical spectacle will play from June 18, 2014 through June 23.
